Erie Hack

Bringing together multiple disciplines across communities to solve Lake Erie’s greatest challenges.

Example social media graphic inviting the community to sign up and tackle one of the many water related issues Erie Hack hoped to address.

In the summer of 2021, I helped to organize Erie Hack, a bi-annual hackathon-type competition where teams generated innovative solutions to some of the greatest challenges faced by Lake Erie. Over the span of several weeks, competitors formed teams, spoke with subject-matter experts, developed concepts, and received feedback from advisors before finally presenting their ideas to the judges panel.

As part of this work, I created several social media graphics for the host organizers and our partner organizations to publish leading up to the start of the competition to garner interest and recruit potential competitors. These graphics centered around some of the core issues surrounding Lake Erie today — aging infrastructure, water inequity, and pollution.

I also created a social media toolkit to share out with our organizing partners, including social media graphics best practices, suggestions for engagement (e.g. ideas fo IG stories), and accessibility optimization (e.g. examples of how to write alt text).

This work was done over the course of summer 2021 for Erie Hack 2021 as part of my contractual engagement with Midstory.
